Call it what you will- a caftan, a muumuu, or as I grew up calling them–schmatta dresses, these baggy beauties have been saving my life lately. Between dealing with this heat wave and dodging and weaving between work stuff and home stuff, I swap out my Birks for a little wedge, add lipstick and a belt to one of these schmattas and, well all of the sudden I go from snugly to swanky in about ten seconds. Do you wear these kinds of dresses outside of the house? Someone please snatch up that little white and yellow one before I do?!!

I had one of these dresses. I loved it so much. I would wear it with a belt and cute sandals in the summer and with black tights and boots in the winter.

I have a closet full of them. It’s hard to wear them here in India, though because they are “house dresses” here or pajamas. The thing you want to jump right into after you shed your sari when you walk in the door. It’s just a little taboo to run around in your pjs so I’ve had to keep them only for home. :) I’ll be excited to put them back into everyday rotation when we get back home in November.

Did you know that “schmatta” is Yiddish for rag/something worthless? My grandmother used to wear “house dresses” but they weren’t nearly as nice as the schmattas above.
