Ever since I found my hutch and painted it pink, I’ve been slightly obsessing over all these rustic cabinet type a deals. I feel like they are such good statement pieces, they’re functional and have oodles of personality… The only trouble is, if you’re not careful, ye old rustic hutch can easily slip into the shabby chic universe (not that there is anything wrong with shabby chic but it’s not my vibe…) So unless the look you’re after is this, this or this, read on to see how I like to choose and style a rustic cabinet to be more boho chic and less shabby chic.
So first of all, look for more straight edges when choosing the cabinet. I think the cabinets with lots of frills, like this one, tend to look more shabbariffic. The distressed white cabinets, (like this) feel very shabby too. If you’re gonna paint it, I say go for it, but no need to fake distress it. If it’s old and has those distresses naturally, lucky you–if not, give it two nice, solid coats of flat paint and let the paint get old naturally.
And now for the styling…
