Jungalow First Aid Kits are Here!

As someone who LOVES to share, it’s been so difficult to keep this a secret for so long, but I am THRILLED to announce the latest product to come out of the Jungalow design studio: Jungalow® BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages and First Aid Kits available exclusively at Target! If anyone had told fourteen-year-old-Justina that she’d grow up to have her artwork on bandages, helping to brighten up ouchies everywhere, I’m not sure she would have believed you, but here we are, and it’s so very exciting! And wait, it gets better… the First Aid kit is currently free with the purchase of three qualifying items at Target (such as our Jungalow BAND-AID^® Brand Adhesive Bandages)!

Today I’m going to pull back the curtain and share a bit of the design process of bringing these kits to life. I loved the idea of designing a First Aid Kit that felt more like a cute clutch than a kit, and I knew it needed to have bright, summery colors. From a marketing perspective I wanted the kit to jump off the shelves and be eye-catching and I also wanted it to feel kind of “signature” Jungalow. I also know that First Aid Kits are important in places like offices, classrooms, cars, kitchens, and workshops so I wanted the design to be versatile, not too juvenile but still fresh.

I started the process by painting “healing” plants: lavender, dandelion, sage, and aloe. I loved the idea of including healing plants on the kit, but I soon learned that we needed to keep the color palette on the kit to 5 colors — and because of the watery, blended nature of watercolors, I soon realized that one of my ink drawings or the patterns we used in designs that are screen-printed would work best for this, so we started to brainstorm and experiment. But not to worry – some of the watercolor healing plants made it on to the Jungalow BAND-AID^® Brand Adhesive Bandages!

These were some of the designs we pitched. I loved that they all felt very “Jungalow,” fun, bright, cheery and jungalicious. Ultimately we all loved “Nana” (the last one) best. Nana is short for “banana” (that’s what Ida called bananas when she was little.) So even though banana plants might not be the first plant to pop into your mind when you think of healing plants, I certainly eat them to cure, errrr certain issues ;).

Nana was also one of our best-selling wallpaper patterns so I knew it was a pattern that resonated. We had to reduce the colors from the original seven colors to five, which was another good design challenge. I’m so smitten with how it came out!

I’ve already got these bags tucked all over my house and studio. We’re filling them up with first aid goodies for Ida’s teachers and for her Karate dojo, and I’m using mine for First Aid, but also for art supplies, makeup,  and as a moon cycle bag ;). I can’t wait to see what you do with yours!
