With a new year comes a fresh start- new goals, fresh ideas, and the opportunity to get a different vibe going. One way I love to change up the vibe at home is through new colors. Color has a pretty powerful impact on our emotions- have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt different? The colors in the room might be responsible- blue, for instance, has a calming effect; orange can stimulate the brain — and the appetite, red can evoke passion and energy. Thinking about the effect color has on your psyche can not only guide your decisions in painting a room, but can ensure your rooms play a positive role in your overall well-being.
Mattie and Dennis‘ yellow dining room (from The New Bohemians) makes a huge visual impact of course, but yellow is also the color of optimism and happiness, and it promotes communication. What better vibe for the dining room, where friends or family will be talking around the table? To get a similar look, try Glidden’s Sunspot yellow.
The deep blue in Dabito’s living room definitely provides a dramatic background to his art wall, but for a room that gets a lot of our attention at home, soothing blue is a powerful choice. Who wouldn’t want to walk into a room that can bring feelings of calm, and freshness? Plus, since the living room is often the first room guests see- blue also communicates dependability- a great first impression. To get this look, try Deep Arctic Night or Rich Navy.
Bedrooms are one of the most challenging for color choice since not only does it have to look good both day and night, but since it’s the first thing you see every day, the color can set the tone for the whole day. In Cami’s bedroom, we choose to bring in a deep purple- but confined it to the ceiling to keep the room feeling bright and airy, while adding some drama. Purple evokes feelings of mystery, magic, and creativity- who wouldn’t want to wake up to that every morning? For this purple look, try Glidden’s Bold Sangria.
This bathroom I spotted in Mexico earlier this year is still fueling my dreams for the bathroom remodel at The Jungalow by the River — the exposed beams against that soft green, not to mention the tile? It’s SO good. Green is a popular bathroom color for a reason- greens promotes feelings of health, growth, healing, and renewal. Plus it’s a relaxing color so whether you’re chilling in the bath, or getting ready for the day ahead- a good green bathroom can get you in the right mood. Try a similar green in your own bathroom with Pastorale Jade or Soft Green Meadow.
Here’s to bringing in new energy with the new year! Cheers to 2016!
