Living in a small space can be a challenge any time of year, but it can be especially daunting during the holidays. Holidays are meant to be a time for entertaining, hanging with friends and family and often hosting out-of-towners. This is all wonderful, but if your home is on the smaller end of the spectrum, hosting the holidays can become stressful. So when Target asked me to devise an idea for small space holiday decor, I immediately thought about one thing: Use the walls. No matter how small your home is, you (hopefully!) have wall space, right? So with that in mind I thought about my ‘spot on the wall‘ concept that I’ve used to add color in several homes that I’ve decorated, and I reimagined the idea as a Christmas Tree.
I painted a triangle for the tree, and a small square for the stump, on the wall in a minty-green shade (you could so use contact paper if your landlord isn’t down with paint). Then I painted a small floating shelf to match. When I installed the shelf on the wall, I centered the brackets around the ‘stump’ to make it more tree-like. The shelf then provides the perfect spot for a few small, beautifully wrapped gifts and some holiday decor, like this deer head I’ve become totally smitten with.
Next I added a string of battery-operated LED lights and simply taped them to the wall with washi tape.
Then I decorated the rest of the holiday corner with small, functional, versatile pieces like this gold tufted bench, (the gold accents help keep things looking festive).
I also am using this agate book-end as a decorative object.
And this cozy (and super soft) throw provides the perfect spot to gather, chill out on the floor, open gifts, celebrate and hang out under the ‘tree.’ Happy (small space) decorating!

This is such a great idea, and also a lovely way not to have to kill a tree or buy plastic – even though I will be getting a real tree this year as I have never had one (I was raised jewish, so no xmas for me!)

This is cool holiday decor, although I would use a tree wall decal rather than paint. I live in a very small condo, so appreciate your sharing this idea.
Merry Christmas.
