A stunning solution for the low-maintenance plant lover is to add a nice, big fat green Agave plant in a jar with water-the bigger the better!
So long as the plant gets some indirect sunshine, and you refresh the water every couple of weeks, the agave plant will thrive, grow roots, and get huge. Not sure about where you live but these plants grow like weeds here in SoCal–they are everywhere!! Just remember when removing the smaller plant (called ‘pup’), leave a small piece of the stem that connected it to the mother plant–so another ‘pup’ can grow in its place. I love seeing the roots of the plant coil and twist in the glass jar.
World Market has these pretty and affordable recycled glass vessels perfect for this.
But you could also use any old carafe, or a simple cylindrical glass vase like in the first photo. I even think they would look amazing as a centerpiece on a fancy dinner table, where would you put one of these pups?
