I got this pierced metal Moroccan lamp at the Rose Bowl Flea last year. It was in pretty bad shape. It needed some new pieces and complete rewiring order to make it function properly–but for $15 I figured at the very least I could use the shade on a different base, a make it into a pendant light. But, after a few months, my man ordered the pieces needed to fix it and helped me to get it back in working order. Once it was working again it was truly a stunner. I totally could have left it as-is, buuuut it must be something hormonal with me right now…(who am I kidding?! I’ve always been like this :P)…but I really wanted to give it a carneval feel and paint all kinds of crazy colors…so that’s what I did:
Using three different colors, I painted the lamp to brought out some of its design details. I am really happy with the results. It’s perfect for the Boomba’s room and lets off a really pretty light–casting star-like shadows onto the walls at night. (And I just love the way it looks with Boomba’s little wool giraffe, a gift from ‘Uncle’ Dabito.)
I know some of you will probably think it was a shame to paint a piece that was so perfect already, but when it comes to design I’m a risk-taker–and taking risks and being a little bit wild is half of the fun.
What do you think? Would you venture to transform a piece that you like as-is? Or do you prefer to keep objects in their authentic state?

looks amazing!!!
i like both…they are beautiful in their own ways. in it’s original state it tells a story, by being transformed it comes alive; your touch adds another story & a future. love it.

Normally I’d be the type to keep the patina and age, but the paint job you did on it is SO charming. I really love it. Great color choices.

I think the result is bright and fun, I really like it!
I like to take risk in design too, I think sometimes it depends of the object and sometimes depend of the weather! hahahaha
I have my Bertoias in bright colours and a tulip chair cover with korean vintage magazines in a decoupage collage style.

I love it! You haven’t broken it or removed anything that compromises the integrity of the original piece. Rather, you added to it! And I personally think the intricate design is easier to see when it’s highlighted with the paint! I love it!

i really like the transformation :) as for whether i prefer to keep something in its authentic state or transform it… it’d really be on an individual basis. there are many things to consider for me!
